Whether you knew Stella for decades or a day, you knew she was born to be a teacher. For many years of her long and productive life, Stella taught the children of Stamford how to read and write and do their sums. But I have in mind the teaching she did outside the school room--the lessons that remain such a lasting blessing to people like me. For the past 40 years, I had the great good fortune of being one of Stella's pupils. From our countless conversations and, particularly, by her example, she taught me much about the virtues that matter most in life, like self-sacrifice, generosity and keeping family bonds strong despite the obstacles of time, place and culture. I will miss Stella immensely but her lessons will remain with me and hence so will she. With love from her son-in-law, Joe.
